Published Friday, October 29th, 2010

Wayne State College students from the Department of Health, Human Performance and Sport won this year's Northland Chapter American College of Sports Medicine (NACSM) Student Bowl.

Wayne State College students from the Department of Health, Human Performance and Sport won the Northland Chapter American College of Sports Medicine (NACSM) Student Bowl at the 35th annual Fall NACSM meeting Oct. 7-8, 2010, at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn.

The team competed in a Jeopardy-style contest against 10 other teams from the NACSM region (Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota). The WSC team was awarded two first-place trophies (one permanent and one traveling). Evan Janssen  of Randolph, Tyler Jensen of Aurora, Matt Stander of Ponca, and first alternate Austin Bright of South Sioux City will represent the Northland Chapter ACSM in the national Student Bowl competition  at the 58th annual national ACSM meeting May 31-June 4 in Denver.

The Student Bowl competition involved answering open-ended short answer questions in three rounds of Jeopardy (single, double, final) during which questions became progressively more difficult as point values increased. Questions were devised by experts in their respective academic areas and covered a variety of topics commonly taught in undergraduate exercise science curriculums: anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, cardiovascular physiology, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, metabolism, body composition, mixing chamber (variety of categories), nutrition, and strength and conditioning.

Students were given just 10 seconds to answer questions and incorrect answers resulted in associated point values being subtracted from the teams running score. Score keepers were positioned at each team's table and three expert judges ruled on answers that were viewed as questionable in accuracy.

The Northland Chapter, one of 12 regional ACSM Chapters in the United States, will provide financial support for WSC students to participate in the national competition.  Wayne State students won the national Student Bowl championship at the 2009 ACSM meeting in Seattle, Wash., defeating teams that included the University of Oregon, University of Connecticut and Florida State University.
