Caller ID spoofing

Published Friday, April 27th, 2018

We have had a number of reports of people receiving calls at home or business that appear via caller id to be from WSC phones, then the caller either hangs up or trying to extract some information.

Greetings all,

We have another round of caller ID spoofing happening lately.  We have had a number of reports of people receiving calls at home or business that appear via caller id to be from WSC phones, then the caller either hangs up or trying to extract some information.  As the particular numbers used are no longer in active service, it’s clear that the caller is trying to do something nefarious.

Unfortunately, the public phone network has no means of enforcing accurate caller ID reporting, so not only are these calls not originating from our phone system, but there’s nothing we can technically do to prevent them.

Our best defense is a well-informed campus community.  Be cautious when giving out business or personal information over the phone and don’t depend on caller ID as your only means of verifying the caller’s identity.  If someone complains to you that WSC has spam calls coming from campus, you can direct them to the fcc’s page on the issue:

Thank you for your help in keeping our campus data and communication resources safe!
