The Fellows Program, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn., introduces music faculty to professions in the music industry and provides them with the means to help prepare students for future careers.
Dr. David Bohnert, Chair of the Department of Music at Wayne State College, will be one of nine music faculty members from across the country who will participate in the CMS-NAMM Summer Fellows Program for Music Faculty during Summer NAMM, in Nashville, Tenn., on July 13.
“I’m thrilled and honored to be given the opportunity to participate in the CMS-NAMM Fellows program this summer," Bohnert said. "The sessions are designed to provide insight into 21st century careers in music, which will help us in the Department of Music continue to provide contemporary and relevant programs at Wayne State College. I’m confident this experience will prove beneficial to current and future Wayne State College students as we constantly strive toward our ever-present goal of preparation for successful careers in the music industry.’’
The NAMM Foundation and The College Music Society announced Bohnert’s selection. The Fellows Program introduces music faculty to professions in the music industry and provides them with the means to help prepare students for careers as 21st-century musicians.
Bohnert is Director of Bands at Wayne State College. He teaches conducting, music education, applied trumpet and brass methods. He often serves as a clinician and a guest conductor. Bohnert performs with A Touch of Brass, the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and Municipal Band, and as a soloist. He has performed at the International Trumpet Guild convention and the American Guild of Organists conference. He serves as chair for the Young Artist Award with the International Trumpet Guild. He was selected for the 2009 State National Bank Teaching Excellence Award at Wayne State College. His academic interests include the repertoire and pedagogy for wind band and trumpet.
Submissions arrived from all over the United States and beyond for selection. These individuals represent the diversity of The College Music Society’s disciplines and regional chapters. The following nine colleagues will participate in the inaugural program:

- Dr. Juan C. Vega (Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music)
- Dr. Grace Xia Zhao (University of La Verne)
- Jeff Francis (University of South Carolina)
Fellows receive a grant of $1,000 to defray transportation, hotel, registration, and meal costs incurred in attending the CMS-NAMM Summer Fellows Program for Music Faculty and Summer NAMM. Fellows will also participate the CMS-NAMM GenNext Faculty Forum in the days following the Fellows Program.
