Dr. Engebretsen shares stories from two visits overseas.
Dr. Barbara Engebretsen of Wayne State College will present “Ethiopia: Challenging Assumptions with 'Wisdom at the Source of the Nile,'” at Gardner Auditorium, Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.
Engebretsen first traveled to Ethiopia and Nepal while on Sabbatical in spring 2015 to meet potential partners for addressing non-communicable diseases in developing countries. Returning to Ethiopia in 2016, she was joined by her colleague from Nepal. Plans are developing to eventually bring small groups of WSC and UNMC students for short term exchanges to partner in the work.
“This presentation will share wisdom and insights from amazing people I’ve met and breathtaking places I’ve seen,” Engebretsen said.
She will challenge the common assumption about the world that the important health issues facing people in the developing world are related to malnutrition, perinatal and maternal mortality, and infectious diseases; while the developed world deals with diseases of abundance leading to obesity, heart disease and diabetes.
