Expect energy, encouragement, and exaltation during Wayne State College’s “An Evening of Choirs” concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in Ley Theatre, located in the Brandenburg Building on campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, visit www.wsc.edu/watch-live. The program will be accessible by selecting the event from the Music Events list at www.wsc.edu/music.

The “Arise with Singing” concert features performances by the Wayne State Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Lyrica, and Fortis. Dr. Matthew Armstrong, director of choral activities at Wayne State, will conduct the concert with piano accompaniment by Shelly Armstrong, Wayne State’s staff accompanist. Wayne State student Christopher Woerdemann, Wayne, will serve as assistant director of Fortis, including conducting the rollicking sea chantey “Hullabaloo Balay.” Fortis also performs the barbershop standard “My Wild Irish Rose” and the inspirational spiritual “Ride the Chariot.”

Lyrica follows with the tongue-in-cheek jazz original “Mansplaining” by MaryAnne Muglia, and the Irish folk song “Sally Gardens,” arranged by Benjamin Britten. Wayne State student Hannah Essink, Beatrice, will conduct “Sally Gardens,” with accompaniment by student Tyler Baue, Wausa.

Chamber Choir repertoire highlights the American hymn “I Will Arise” arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw and the haunting “1,000 Beautiful Things” by Annie Lennox with student Kora Keslin, McCook, as alto soloist. To celebrate the 125th anniversary of composer and arranger William L. Dawson, the Concert Choir presents the well-known spiritual “Ezekiel Saw de Wheel.” The choirs also sing standard choral works by Palestrina, Purcell, and J.S. Bach.
