Our new Student Spotlight weekly series kicks off this week with senior Griffin Ryan, the new president of the Wayne State Student Senate. Ryan, who is from Wahoo, Neb., is majoring in Business Administration / Economics and Political Science.
As Student Senate president, he hit the ground running this summer by organizing his committees and getting scheduling in place. He also finalized the members for his Cabinet.
Ryan said his biggest goal this year is streamlining the allocation process, so WSC clubs and organizations have an easier way to ask for and receive funds. Additionally, his predecessor, Addie Hejl, began to revamp the seating areas in the library during her tenure as president, but unforeseen budget cuts put Hejl’s plans on hold. Ryan intends to make Hejl’s plan a reality.
“Addie had a great idea and it got sidetracked, so I definitely want to see it through for her this year,” said Ryan.
Ryan said he was attracted to Wayne State since the small campus and Wayne community were similar to Wahoo. He also was impressed with the instructors he met during a campus visit.
“Everything just kind of fell into place during that campus visit,” said Ryan. “Being accepted into the Rural Law Opportunities Program (RLOP) clinched everything for me.”
In addition to RLOP, Ryan is also active in the Delta Sigma Pi professional business organization, the Sigma Beta Delta honor society for business administration and management, Future Business Leaders of America, Pi Gamma Mu (social sciences honor society), the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society for first-year academic success, the Philomatheans honor society, the Pi Sigma Alpha national political science honor society, and the Political Science Club.
Ryan will graduate in May 2025, and he intends to pursue law school or graduate school.
