Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program Requirements

MAT Program of Study

MAT Core Requirements: 12 hours

  • *EDU 542 MAT Pre-Teaching Seminar (0)
  • EDU 652 Instructional Theory and Practice (3)
  • EDU 658 Fundamentals of Curriculum Development PK-16 (3)
  • SPD 522 Teaching Exceptional Learners in Inclusive Classrooms (3)
  • SPD 636 Social/Emotional Behavior (3)
  • EDU 545 Preparing for Level 3: Clinical Practice (0)

*Candidates who have been approved for an Alternative Program Teaching Permit (Pathway 5) will be required to complete the pre-teaching seminar before beginning any MAT coursework.
 
MAT Clinical Experience: 6 hours

Choose one of the following:

  • *EDU 552 Clinical Practice for Elementary School (6)
  • EDU 554 Clinical Practice for Middle Level (6)
  • EDU 556 Clinical Practice for Secondary School (6)

*Candidates are allowed to enroll in clinical practice upon successful completion of the core requirements and the EDU 557 elective course.

MAT Concentration Requirements: 18 hours

  • EDU 557 Human Relations in a Pluralistic Society (1)
  • Electives upon advisement* (17)

 *Electives will be determined following a transcript review and MAT program coordinator advising to ensure these courses align with the career goals and interests of the candidate. Options may include the following:

  • Dual credit credentialing for secondary candidates who wish to meet the 18-credit hour requirement of graduate content courses
  • Meeting requirements for additional endorsements
  • Advancement in a specific area, such as curriculum development, effective instruction, classroom management, inclusive instruction, educational technology, educational leadership, or school counseling
