Sport and Recreation Management (MSOM) Program of Study

The online master’s in sport and recreation management (MSOM) is a cooperative program between Chadron State (CSC), Peru State (PSC), and Wayne State College (WSC) in Nebraska.  This means you can take the core courses of the program through any of these three institutions, then take classes for the sport and recreation focus area through Wayne State.

MSOM core courses: 18 hours

Three hours from one of the following:

  • CA 530 Research Process and Practice (CSC) (3)
  • EDCI 631 Research Design and Data Analysis (CSC) (3)
  • PED 650 Research Design (WSC) (3) - OR -
  • EDU 603 Introduction to Graduate Studies and Research (WSC) (3)
  • MGMT 601 Study Design and Data Collection (PSC) (3)

Three hours from one of the following:

  • MATH  533 Stats Methods/Data Analysis (CSC) (3)
  • MGMT 602 Stats Methods/Data Analysis (PSC) (3)
  • PED 622 Stats Applications/Data Analysis (WSC) (3)
  • PSYC 538 Behavioral Statistics (CSC) (3)

One course from each of the following four areas (12 hours):

Leadership

  • BUS 665 Leadership Seminar (3)
  • BUS 627 Ethics in Leadership (3)

Note: If a student would like to emphasize leadership in their program of study they may, with special permission from their advisor, take two leadership courses from the above area as part of their 12 hours.

Communication

  • BUS 620 Managerial Communication (3)
  • CNA 548 Organizational Communication II (3)

Organizational behavior

  • BUS 690 Seminar in Organizational Behavior (3)

Conflict management and organizational psychology

  • PSY 535 Industrial Organizational Psychology (3)

Sport and recreation management focus area: 12 hours

Three hours from one of the following:

  • PED 631 Seminar in Sport Management (3) 
  • PED 653 Program Management and Transition of Sport (3)
  • PED 664 Sport Event and Facility Management (3) 

Nine (9) elective hours from any of the following:

  • PED 605 The Economy of Sport (3) 
  • PED 610 Legal Aspects of Sport (3) 
  • PED 612 Advanced Sport Marketing and Promotion (3) 
  • PED 671 Recent Lit and Research in HHPS (3) PED 685 Social Issues in Sport (3)

Thesis, scholarly project, or internship: 6 hours

The focus of this part of the program will be to emphasize knowledge integration and application of learned principles.
