Pre-Architecture Program of Study

2023-24 Academic Year

Wayne State College does not offer an architecture degree but can prepare students in building a foundation so they are ready to transfer. While specifics of requirements and transferability will vary from institution to institution, the following requirements can be expected. Consultation with an academic advisor is highly recommended.

Communication Skills

Students will likely need to meet requirements in both written and oral communication. Some of the courses that have possibility of meeting transfer requirements are listed below. Not every course in the list will be required but what would potentially transfer will vary from institution to institution.

  • CNA 100 Principles of Human Communication (3)
  • CNA 201 Small Group Communication (3)
  • CNA 210 Interpersonal Communication (3)
  • ENG 102 Composition Skills (3)
  • ENG 206 Workplace Writing (3)

Mathematics

Some institutions require calculus. Others do not. Those that do not will require some form of trigonometry.

  • MAT 130 Precalculus (5)
  • MAT 140 Calculus (5)

Science

A course in physics will be required - either calculus-based for those programs that require calculus, or algebra-based for those that only require trigonometry. A lab component will also be needed.

  • PHY 201 General Physics I (3)
  • PHY 301 University Physics I (4)
  • PHY 321 Physics Laboratory I (1)

Art / Design

In addition to the pragmatic elements of solid construction, much of architecture includes an artistic element. Students should expect to engage art and design principles in their program of study. Not every course in the list is required but what would potentially transfere will vary from institution to institution.

  • ART 103 Design (3)
  • ART 110 Drawing I (3)
  • ITE 211 Architectural and Industrial Finishing (3)
  • ITE 214 Residential Drawing (3)
  • ITE 219 Mechanical and Engineering Drafting (3)

General Education and Other Courses

Most institutions will have general education requirements that include history, art, language, philosophy, society, and/or personal well-being. Some of those will be potentially met by some of the requirements above. Others will need to be taken independent of direct relevance to the architecture program. These will be needed to make up a balance of 30 hours for a one-year-then-transfer plan or up to 60 for a two-year-then transfer plan.
