Natural History Museum and Planetarium Signs

Service-Learning at WSCService-Learning at WSCGraphic Design I (Fall 2016) and II (Spring 2017), and Interactive Media (Spring 2017)
Led by Josh Piersanti, art students were tasked with creating new signs for Wayne State College’s A. Jewell Schock Natural History Museum and Fred G. Dale Planetarium. The goal was to increase visibility in the community for both resources. The work began with research and sketches, which were digitized and critiqued before the final stage. The applied curriculum project allowed the students to practice their skills while providing some new visuals for the museum and planetarium.

The art department has completed many other Service-Learning projects. Many of these projects can be viewed online in the WSC Graphic Design Portfolio.

Computer Mapping/GPS

Spring 2017
WSC students collaborated with St. Mary Catholic School to provide a geocaching activity. Dr. Lesli Rawlings and her students hid camouflage eggs around the playground area of the school and then invited fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students to find the eggs using clues and a handheld GPS device. WSC students helped the children gain experience and confidence with the GPS units. The St. Mary’s teacher said the event was “engaging for all learners, and well organized.”
