Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator (4pm-8pm)
Let’s you turn any room into the bridge of a spaceship. You and your friends assume the jobs of Captain, Helm, Science, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control. Together you operate your ship and defend the sector from evil aliens. Artemis simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several computers together. One computer runs the simulation and the “main screen”, while the others serve as workstations for the normal jobs a bridge officer might do. Artemis is a social game where several players are together in one room (“bridge”). And while they all work together, one player plays the Captain, a person who sits in the middle, doesn’t have a workstation, and tells everyone what to do.

Psycho History is Here
A Review of Asimov’s Foundation Series in Light of Recent Scientific Advancements”.  Scientists have often scoffed at the psycho history concept in Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series, but recent advancements in predictive science indicate that he may have been onto something brilliant. We will discuss this evidence and explore the possibilities of predicting the future based on data.

Presenter: Barbara Hayford    Rm: Meadowlark

A Hero's Journey to Save the Cat.
Description: Science fiction and fantasy stories often have familiar elements and similarities.  This session will explore two standard formulas.  Joseph Campbell’s “A Hero’s Journey” was a common formula employed by Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. “Save the Cat” is a modern movie-writing formula that is used by a surprising number of films, in all genre.  WSC faculty member Michael Marek will show you how both of them work.

Presenter: Michael Marek    Rm: Cottonwood

6 PM

What can we learn from Japanese cartoons about culture?
In this presentation, I will show some clips from several older Japanese cartoons that seem very different on the surface, but have an underlying theme: the main character is relatively weak but is nevertheless determined to become incredibly strong.  He works very diligently with enthusiasm and focus and, ultimately, emerges victorious.  Once he reaches the goal that he initially set, the next goal becomes visible, and he then aspires to overcome that challenge, in an ongoing progression of growth.  Could this trend in animation have any connection to the image that many have of Japanese people having a very strong work ethic?  Might it suggest a cultural view of life as an evolving journey?  Let’s enjoy discussing these and other ideas at this year’s WillyCon!

Presenter: Michael Hull    Rm: Bluestem

This panel was a blast last year. Time for round 2. Who says dating sims are only for lonely people? At this panel, we do this together! That's right. We, as a panel, will collectively play the infamous bird dating game. And every decision in the game will be decided upon by majority vote. Forever alone... together. Not recommended for humans under the age of 14. Or with low tolerance for absurdity. Time for the pidegoning.

Presenter: Regan and Audrey    Rm: Bluestem

Nudies, Rudies, & Crudies (18+ ages)
“If this movie had any less of a point, it’d be a sphere!” The title was to get your attention and so was the quote. Behold Brad Jones, “The Cinema Snob,” a man unlucky enough to watch and discuss the darkest and most bizarre corners of cinema. Since 2007, Jones has reviewed nearly 300 films so bad, so deliciously awful, that they’re entertaining. This pretentious yet hilarious film critic and character endures the horrors of obscure exploitation films, nasty skin flicks, and laughable B movies such as Woodchipper Massacre, The Refrigerator, Plutonium Baby, King Dong, and Billy the Kid vs. Dracula. He exposes himself to a smorgasbord of misery and crap for his viewers, and it’s about time we acknowledge his existence. Come to learn more about him, his cats, and his Stoned Gremlin Productions channel. Mature content. Ages 18+.

We are Not Protectors. We Fight for the Sake of our Wishes, and This is How We Pay for Them
The magical girl genre is a pretty well-known concept. Girls get special powers, use said powers to do good, and pretty much spend their time balancing a normal life with saving the world. And they all live happily ever after. Well Puella Magi Madoka Magica takes that concept and twists it into one of the darkest animes ever. In a series consisting of only 12 episodes and three movies, Madoka is full of hope, tragedy, and heartache. Come discuss the battles Madoka, Sayaka, Mami, Homura, and Kyoko face and dare to make a contract with Kyubey. WARNING:  Spoilers will be discussed all the way through the third movie, Rebellion.
