Courses for the online master's program in Social Sciences Education

All courses are available online. The emphasis in the social sciences offers a wide range of disciplines for students to engage. It should have particular appeal for those interested in advancing their skills and foundation in teaching careers in secondary and post-secondary education, and for students without a teaching certificate but interested in graduate level discipline-based course work.

 

Professional education core: 15 credit hours

• EDU 603 Introduction to Educational Research and Design (3)
• EDU 652 Instructional Theory and Practice (3)
• EDU 658 Fundamentals of Curriculum Development PK-16  (3) 
• EDU 674 History and Philosophy of Education (3)

Social sciences concentration: 21 credit hours

Courses must include at least 9 hours from one content area, and at least 6 hours from another content areas. Content areas include:

• Geography
• History
• Political Science
• Psychology
• Sociology

Plus 6 hours of electives by advisement and approval of the Dean of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.  Additionally, you are required to complete a final research project (SSC 695 or other prefix, 3 hours).

Licensing and Certification: This program is designed for teachers who are already certified in this content area as an opportunity to go deeper into their specialty while simultaneously earning a master’s degree.
