Policies

Holidays and Academic Breaks

Closed: New Year’s Day, Easter Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day, & Christmas Day as well as other closed or reduced hours during holiday’s and academic breaks. Please see website or Twitter for special hours.

Access and Membership

The Rec Center is a controlled access facility. Only authorized Students, Faculty, and Staff are allowed entry and must check in at the Front Desk.

All currently enrolled WSC Students must present their Cat Card at the Front Desk to enter the Rec Center.

Full and part-time WSC student membership fees are included in the mandatory fees assessed to all students.

Any student paying General Activity fees has full access to the Rec Center with their Cat Card.

Summer access is allowed for students enrolled in summer class and/or the upcoming fall semester.

Use of another person’s identification is prohibited. Doing so will result in confiscation of ID. Other disciplinary action can consist of a two-week suspension by both the card user and the card owner.

Membership registration forms for employee’s spouse and dependents must be completed at the Student Financial Services Office located in the Hahn Administration Building. The form must be updated each year beginning July 1st.  The membership is free of charge. Spouses and dependent children are required to get an ID card for access to the recreation facilities. Dependent children 18 and under must be accompanied by their parent/guardian when using the facilities. 

Dependent Status: 

  • Natural-born or legally adopted.
  • Has not reached the age of 26.
  • Financially responsible for and claimed on your current years taxes.
  • Not a WSC Student.

Student ID Forgiveness Policy

Students are permitted access to the Rec Center five times a semester (defined below) without their student ID.

  • First day of fall classes to Dec. 31
  • Jan. 1 to last day of spring semester finals
  • Day after last day of spring semester finals to the day before first day of fall classes

This only allows students access to the facility but not to participate in any Intramural activities (which has their own Cat Card check-in system).

To obtain or replace your Cat Card go to Service Desk in the Library.

The Front Desk staff will track when students utilize the forgiveness policy.

American Disability Act (ADA) Statement

The Rec Center encourages participation in activities by individuals with disabilities. If you are an individual with a disability who requires accommodation in order to participate in a program, please contact the Assistant Director in advance at 375-      7580 or email chpitki1@wsc.edu.

Assumption of Risk

The Rec Center operates on an “exercise at your own risk” policy. The use of the facility and its programs is completely voluntary. Each individual utilizing the facility assumes the risk for any harm or injuries sustained. Neither Wayne State College, nor the Rec Center can assume any responsibilities for injuries incurred through participation in its programs and/or services in or outside the facility. However, all injuries should be reported to the Front Desk or Assistant Director and an accident report completed. It is strongly advised that participants use caution and be aware of potential health risks associated with exercise, and obtain a physical from a physician before beginning an exercise program. It is strongly recommended that every participant of the Rec Center activities be covered by a health and accident insurance policy.

Locker Rentals and Day Lockers

All lockers are available to be checked out one semester at a time. 

All lockers not renewed or vacated by the date indicated (end of each semester) will be opened and cleaned out. Prior to clean out, efforts will be made to contact the owner of the contents in the locker and items may be stored for up to 7 days.

The Rec Center is not responsible for lost or missing items, either before or after clearance of locker. WSC will not guarantee the security of the items vacated for lockers. Items deemed to have little or no value will not be stored nor made available for retrieval.

All lockers with the Rec Center are the property of Wayne State College and are subject to applicable WSC policies. Wayne State College reserves the right to alter the policies governing the use of lockers with appropriate notice. Use of a locker by a person other than who it is issued is prohibited.

Misuse of the locker may lead to termination of locker privileges and/or membership.

In order to claim removed locker contents, if applicable, members should visit the Rec Center Desk. A photo ID is required to retrieve items.

It is recommended that facility users not bring valuables into the facilities. Wayne State College is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items.

Day use lockers may be used on a daily basis; however, contents and locks must be removed each day by the close of the facility. No locks are allowed on lockers designated for daily use after closing hours. Those locks remaining on the daily lockers will be considered unauthorized and removed. Wayne State College will not be held accountable for the cost of any personal locks removed from Rec Center lockers. All items removed from lockers with unauthorized locks will be disposed of immediately. 

Only one locker will be issued to any one member.

All personal items must be stored completely within a locker. All items left outside of a locker, whether secured or not, will be removed and disposed of accordingly. 

General Policies, Rules, and Regulations

Posted rules and verbal instructions issued by supervisory personnel will be strictly followed. 

Use of the Rec Center is a privilege. Rules of conduct must be observed at all times. Anyone violating posted policies, engaging in any disorderly conduct, inappropriate behavior, or disruptive behavior, including verbal or physical abuse of employees, is subject to immediate removal and loss of facility privileges.

Personal conduct situations that are not covered by other provisions will be dealt with in an appropriate manner by the Assistant or Associate Director.

 All patrons are expected to be responsible, courteous, and safety conscious at all times. Disorderly conduct, abuse or misuse of the facility or its equipment, or disregard for policies will not be tolerated. Violators will be asked to leave the facility and may be subject to disciplinary action. Violators of the policies may also be suspended from using the facilities. Depending on the severity of the violation, case may be referred to the Dean of Students, Behavioral Intervention Team, and/or Title IX Office.

No outdoor sport may be played in the Rec Center during open times unless inside the curtains. (Baseball, softball, soccer, football, Frisbee, floor hockey, etc.)

Curtains should not be used as nets. Throwing or kicking any implement or ball into the curtains is strictly prohibited. 

Kicking basketballs/volleyball into the wall is prohibited as well as sitting or standing on basketballs.

Bicycles, unicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, scooters, or hover boards are not allowed to be used inside the facility.

Strollers are allowed in the Rec Center arena but not in other areas.

Only certified service animals are allowed in the facility. All other animals, including emotional support animals, are strictly prohibited.

Use of lounge areas and informal recreation spaces as well as RC 203 or multipurpose courts are first come, first serve basis. Rec Center fitness programs, intramural activities, classes, athletic practices and scheduled or reserved spaces will take priority over informal recreation at certain times.

Personal items should not be left unattended, placed on the floor or on equipment. Patrons are encouraged to use locker rooms or day lockers for belongings. Personal items are not the responsibility of the Rec Center.

Staff members cannot hold equipment or valuables for any participants.

The Front Desk and Administration Office cannot make change for patrons or visitors.

Use of cell phone cameras or photographic equipment is not permitted in the facility or locker rooms.

Sweat towels and shower towels can be checked out at the Front Desk and should be returned when finished.

The Rec Center is a substance free facility. Possession of alcohol, illegal drugs, and tobacco (this includes smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes) are not allowed. Possession of such items will result in removal from the facility and further disciplinary action as deemed appropriate by the Rec Center Administrative Staff. The Rec Center reserves the right to check liquid substances in personal beverage containers.

No spitting in water fountains. Spitting is only allowed in trash cans.

All cardio, fitness, and weight equipment must be used for their intended purposes.

Headphones must be used at all times while listening to personal music.

Excessive hanging on the basketball rims is not allowed

Food and Drink

Food is not allowed at any time in the activity areas beyond the Front Desk unless otherwise authorized. Chartwells Food Service has all catering rights and must be used for any and all catering for events or reservations in the Rec Center.

Water and other drinks in securely closed containers may be used in the exercise or gym areas.

Glass containers are prohibited at all times.

Attire and Footwear

The Rec Center staff reserves the right to determine the acceptability of all exercise attire. Failure to dress properly will result in denied assess of the Rec Center.

Clothing with offensive (vulgar) language, designs, or pictures is not acceptable.

Cut-off t-shirts/open back shirts that also expose the chest/nipples or skin below the men’s pec line, or women’s bra strap line, throughout any range of motion are not permitted.

Shorts/pants must be worn for all Rec Center activities; Shorts must be long enough to cover the buttocks and groin throughout any range of motion.

Appropriate undergarments are required while exercising.

Properly laundered clothing required for sanitary reasons.

Non-marking, soft soled, closed toe athletic shoes must be worn in the Rec Center. Clean, dry shoes not used outdoors are encouraged.

Jeans, belts, metal zippers, studs, jewelry, etc. are discouraged as they may damage exercise equipment and pose a risk to injury.

Racquetball goggles should be worn in the racquetball courts at all times.

Lost and Found

All found items of value are turned over to Campus Security. Valuables (iPods, wallets, jewelry, etc.) are stored in the Campus Security office and must be claimed from a Campus Security officer.

Report any lost or stolen items to the Front Desk or contact Campus Security.

Items can be retrieved at the Front Desk within two weeks.

All unclaimed items are subject to be donated.

Equipment Checkout

Checking out

  • Any student, faculty or staff can checkout equipment with their Cat Card.
  • It is the student, faculty or staff’s responsibility to keep track and return their specific piece of equipment.
  • Outdoor equipment (equipment taken outside the building) must be returned before Rec Center closes.

Returning

  • Any checked out equipment must be returned to the Front Desk after use.
  • If not returned, a hold will be placed on the membership account. The individual will not be allowed to access the facility until the equipment has been returned or the individual has met with one of the Rec Center Administrative Staff.


Photography Policy

All photography, videotaping, etc. within the Rec Center must be pre-approved by the Assistant Director, located in RC 206B.

Guidelines:

  • Photography must be conducted without disruption or limitations to Rec Center operations, accessibility of equipment, entrances/exits, doorways, and high traffic areas.
  • Photography is permitted for noncommercial use only. Photographs may not be published, sold, reproduced, distributed, or otherwise commercially exploited in any manner.
  • Taking photos or video of individuals without their consent is prohibited and is cause for immediate removal from the Rec Center and may be reported to Campus Security, Student Conduct Office, and/or Title IX Office.
  • A suitable location for photo shoots must be agreed upon.
  • An appropriate time must be scheduled prior to the shoot.

Signage Policy 

The Rec Center will accept WSC sponsored event or recognized student organization posters to hang in the facility. All posters must be approved by the Assistant Director. The Rec Center reserves the right to refuse posters if deemed necessary.

Reservations and Events

Wayne State recreation facilities were designed with the primary purpose of improving the quality of educational and developmental activities available to the students, faculty, and staff of Wayne State College. Scheduled college activities will have priority, and during certain time periods may restrict usage of the facility.  

On Campus Groups

  • Contact the Assistant Director at 402-375-7580. On campus groups with off campus participants will be required to sign a WSC Facilities Agreement and provide a Certificate of Insurance.
  • Recurring reservations can be made no more than a week in advance.
  • No reservations Monday – Thursday: 8am – 6pm or Friday: 8am – 4pm.

Court Reservations for Students

  • May be made a maximum of 24 hours in advance by the Rec Center Supervisor or Assistant Director. Reservations can be made for one court for one hour. The Rec Center Supervisor can extend time if Rec Center is not busy. 
  • No reservations Monday – Thursday: 8am – 6pm or Friday: 8am – 4pm.

Racquetball Courts, Exercise Video Room (RC203), Outdoor Tennis Courts, Walking Trail, Outdoor Track, Frisbee Golf Course, and Sand Volleyball courts are first come, first serve areas. For group use or event request contact the Campus Rec Coordinator at 402-375-7481

Harassment Policy

All patrons and visitors of the Rec Center must abide by the Sex Harassment Policy including Sexual Violence Policy NSCS Board Policy 3200 and 3021 as defined in the Student Code of Conduct. 

Title IX and Opportunity Policy

It is the policy of WSC not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry gender, transgender status, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation age, disability, veteran’s status or any other protected class in the offering of all benefits, services and education and employment opportunities. 

As part of this policy, WSC has designated a Title IX coordinator to assist individuals with any concerns about sexual discrimination. Anyone with concerns or questions should contact WSC’s Title IX Coordinator or the Title IX support team. The complaints including harassment or sexual discrimination should be directed to WSC’s Title IX Coordinator. The complaint process will follow the procedures laid out in the Student Handbook. 

Student Code of Conduct
