Department of Health, Human Performance, and Sport

Our programs promote healthy lifestyles and prepare students in fields related to sport and health enhancement.

About the Department

The Health, Human Performance, and Sport Department prepares students for careers in exercise science, physical education, sport management, athletic training, strength and conditioning, and other careers related to health and human performance. With our state-of-the-art human performance laboratory, you’ll have access to elaborate equipment designed for a variety of testing needs, including body composition, aerobic and anaerobic fitness, and functional movement assessment. Our facilities and equipment are used for physical health and well-being classes, exercise physiology labs, training students in fitness evaluation and injury assessment, and conducting research.

As a student here, you’ll have opportunities to participate in a variety of community service projects. You can also get a broad range of hands-on sport management experiences, including working with the Wayne State athletic department and organizing promotional events. If graduate school is in your future, we provide an online master's degree in Sport and Recreation and an online master's degree in Human Performance and Wellness.

Wayne State’s exercise science program is recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association in the Education Recognition Program (ERP) for the field of strength and conditioning.

Trevor Bandieras

“Wayne is awesome. There are a lot of great facilities here, lots of great equipment to use and learn, and they really provide an excellent teaching environment. There are a lot of classes that deal with things that physical therapists will do, like goniometers and measuring the patient’s range of motion. I’ve learned about bike tests and how to perform those, and how to test people’s VO2s and take their blood pressures and heart rates. We’ve learned about how the body works together and what some of the indications are for issues, and how you can fix those patients’ issues and help them feel better.”
