Welcome Weekend

FAQs

Why should I attend Welcome Weekend?
The Welcome Weekend orientation is your first and best opportunity to meet and develop lasting friendships with fellow students. Informational, social, and recreational activities are scheduled throughout the weekend, which enable you to form a strong connection to Wayne State College and help you settle into your new home. Research shows that students who attend and actively participate in new student orientation programs persist and perform at higher levels when compared with students who do not.

Is there a fee?
Yes. The Welcome Weekend fee is $95 and is automatically applied to your fall bill.

How do I register for Welcome Weekend?
When you register for classes you are automatically registered for Welcome Weekend. That was easy – one less thing on your to-do list!

Will I receive information about Welcome Weekend prior to my arrival on campus in August?
Yes. The Office of Student Activities will send you a brochure in late July or early August with additional information about Welcome Weekend. If you have questions before then, contact Student Activities at 402-375-7322.

When may I move into my residence hall?
Bowen Residents: Early drop-off will be available noon-6 p.m. Aug. 10-11, and 7-10 p.m. Aug 15. Early drop-off provides new Bowen residents with a 30-minute access window to move your belongings into your room (not settle and arrange your things). Hand trucks will be available on a limited basis. You may also use the regularly scheduled move-in time of 7-11 a.m. Aug. 16.

All other residents: Check-in begins at noon Aug. 18.

Where do I go to check into my residence hall?
All Residence Halls: Enter campus via the route emailed to your WSC email address. Proceed to the front desk of your assigned residence hall to pick up your key and start your move-in process.

Where do I check-in for Welcome Weekend?
Residential Students will get their WOW packets when they check into their Residence Hall. Commuter Students will need to check-in at the Kanter Student Center.

Will I be able to eat on campus during Welcome Weekend?
Yes. The dining hall in the Kanter Student Center will observe regular weekend hours of operation. You will not need to pay for your meals as they are included in your fee. Welcome Weekend programs and activities are scheduled around meals over the weekend. In most cases, you will be able to eat with your ambassador and fellow small group members.

Where may I pick up my Student ID or have my photo taken for an ID?
If you attended a summer registration day event you should already have your student ID. Please remember to bring your ID with you to campus; your ID will be used to access your residence hall and your dining services plan. If you did not attend a registration day event, you may have your photo taken in the atrium once you have checked in for Welcome Weekend. Your ID will be printed while you wait and available for pick-up immediately.

What about my parking pass?
The pass is included in your student fees and will be included in your packet. If not, then you can pick it up in the Student Financial Services Office located on the first floor of the Hahn Administration Building (Room 104). The office will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Will I have time to purchase textbooks during Welcome Weekend?
Yes. The WSC Campus Store will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and 12-5 p.m. Sunday. The bookstore is located in the Kanter Student Center Atrium.

Will I be able to attend Welcome Weekend programs and activities if I am a fall athlete?
The Office of Student Activities is working with the Athletic Department to coordinate practice and team meeting schedules so fall in-season athletes are able to attend as many orientation programs and activities as possible. Check with your coach when you arrive on campus for pre-season training to learn when you will be able to attend orientation.
