Background Notes

The Nebraska Normal College (NNC) had been founded by James M. Pile in 1891. After more than a decade of exceptional leadership and hard work, Professor Pile’s health began to decline. Concern over the future of the NNC led to the idea of having the State of Nebraska purchase the school.  Although the idea of having a state-owned college in Wayne was popular among the town’s people, other towns were just as interested in having a state school. After a long, hard fought battle, the state legislature passed a bill authorizing the state’s purchase of the Nebraska Normal College in 1909. Four men of Wayne are largely credited with the successful campaign: Phil H. Kohl, Henry C. Ley, James Britton, and John T. Bressler. Governor Ashton C. Shallenburger signed the bill into law on April 6, 1909. Sadly, Professor Pile had passed away the month before.

The bill authorizing purchase of Pile’s Nebraska Normal College had become law. However, the legislature had failed to authorize the funds to make the purchase and run the college. Mrs. Ella Pile, James Pile’s widow, and their son, Fred, continued to run the college until those funds were appropriated the following year. On September 1, 1910 the State Of Nebraska officially took possession of the NNC which then became the State Normal School at Wayne. Classes began on September 19, 1910 with Ulysses Sylvester Conn (1865-1936) was selected as the first president of the school.

In 1921, by act of the State Legislature, the school became a State Normal School and Teachers College with legal authority to grant baccalaureate degrees in education. In 1949, the Legislature changed the name of the institution to Nebraska State Teachers College at Wayne and granted authority to confer the baccalaureate degree for study in liberal arts. The graduate program leading to a master’s was authorized in 1955, and in 1963 the Legislature changed the name of the college to Wayne State College. For a number of years the college was also known unofficially as Wayne State Teachers College.

Scope and Content Notes

Approximately 20 boxes of materials were transferred from the president’s office to the archives in the summer of 2006. Two of these boxes were labeled “Historical Files” and “Oversized Historical Files,” respectively. There were also two boxes with folders labeled “Historical – [subject]” as well as individual folders with similar labels scattered among several of the other boxes. The bulk of the materials in this series came from those files. A few unorganized, relevant materials already in library storage were added to this series.

NOTE: Although these series has been given the title “Historical Files,” it does not mean that these are the only historical files in the Archives. Indeed the entire Archives consists of historical files. This series was given the title “Historical Files” only because the files had been labeled as such by the president’s office.

Folders in Box 1 are organized chronologically by decade. Boxes 4, 5 and 6 are organized by subject. Box 2 contains various Golden Anniversary materials. Box 3 contains oversized materials relating to the construction of dormitories.
