What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is a transaction in which one library can obtain materials it does not own from other cooperative institutions.  Interlibrary Loan cannot be used to borrow textbooks.

Who may borrow through Interlibrary Loan?

Only current faculty, staff, and students at Wayne State College may use Interlibrary Loan Services.

What may be borrowed?

Books and journal articles are the most common materials borrowed, but other material formats may also be loaned (or photocopied).  The rules vary from institution to institution.  Interlibrary Loan cannot be used to borrow textbooks.

How does Interlibrary Loan work?

Please submit requests using the online form available above. If you have questions please stop at the Circulation Desk in the Library. When requesting periodicals, be sure to give complete citation information. If you have the ISSN or ISBN numbers for periodicals, please include them on the request.

How long does it take?

Book requests take one to three weeks to fulfill. Articles will usually take one to seven days.

How much does it cost?

Normally Interlibrary Loan will not cost the borrower anything.  If there are charges for an item, you will be notified to see if you are willing to pay the charges before the items are requested. Cost of photocopied material varies. If you do not wish to spend more than a certain amount, you may indicate this on your request.

How will I know when the material has arrived?

When the material arrives, you will be notified by telephone or email. Materials can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. Articles are sent directly to you through email. You may inquire there even if you have not been notified of arrival.

How long can I keep it?

The loan period is determined by the lending library and is usually 3 weeks. Lending libraries often discourage renewals. A renewal request by phone or in person must be made 4 days in advance of the due date. There will be a 25-cent-per-day charge on every overdue book.  Patrons with overdue interlibrary loan materials will be ineligible for additional interlibrary loan orders until materials are returned or renewed.

Where do I pick up and return materials?

Materials are picked up and returned to the Circulation Desk in the library.
