Mentoring and Membership

Mission

The purpose of the Wayne State College mentoring program is to welcome new employees to the college community. The mentoring program will provide the structure to foster one-to-one relationships between new staff and current staff with the experienced staff mentor guiding and serving as a resource to the new staff mentee.

Goals

  • Coordinate the mentoring program goals with the Wayne State College mission statement and AQIP goals.
  • Establish a mentoring program at WSC for each staff group: faculty, professional staff and support staff.
  • Establish the mentoring program under the auspices of the Human Resources Office as soon as possible.
  • Conduct evaluations of the mentoring program and adjust the program to address unmet employee needs and concerns.

Ethics Statement

The WSC mentoring program will operate with a strong ethical component governing rules of conduct of the participants in the program. Both mentors and mentees will agree to abide by the following ethical conduct by agreeing to participate in the program.

  • Confidentiality: Both mentors and mentees will respect comments made to them in confidence.
  • Relationship boundaries: The mentor program will be established to respect relationship issues already addressed in employee union contracts. The mentor program participants will be expected to maintain professional relationships with each other.
  • Description of the program: The mentor program is not a substitute for a supervisory relationship and mentors should not assume supervisory responsibilities for mentees.
  • Attitude: The mentors should be objective, unbiased and nonjudgmental.

Oversight Committee

The oversight committee will include one representative from each staff senate and either the president or her designee.

Screening Process

The oversight committee will follow the same process to review and screen applicants for mentors and mentees. The following issues will be considered:

  • Ethics
  • Time availability
  • Staff person's ability to commit to the process
