PHEAST

PHEAST (Public Health Early Admissions Student Track) is collaboration between the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Public Health (CoPH) and Wayne State College (WSC). PHEAST students will gain provisional acceptance to the Masters of Public Health Program (MPH) CoPH following the completion of their sophomore year at WSC.

The CoPH will accept up to three PHEAST students per year. While the CoPH and WSC will encourage students with rural backgrounds to apply to PHEAST the program will be open to individuals who meet the PHEAST requirements listed.

 

What is Public Health?

Public health is the science and art of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, research of disease and injury prevention. 

Public health is everything from leading a healthier lifestyle to ensuring safe drinking water. Public Health creates a safer world for yourself and future generations. 

Possible careers in public health include: 

• Medical Investigator
• Health Educator 
• Hospital Administrator 
• Epidemiologist (disease detective)  

 

Program Benefits

• Early admission to the UNMC Master of Public Health program. 
• Tuition waiver your junior and senior year at Wayne State. 
• Access to UNMC's College of Public Health faculty, staff and alumni for mentoring during your junior and senior year.
• A scholarship to take the “Foundations of Public Health” during the your senior year at Wayne State. Upon your acceptance into the College of Public Health, the three semester-credit hours from this course will be used towards the forty-five (45) credit hours required for the MPH. 

 

Program Requirements

In order to be accepted into UNMC's Master of Public Health program, you are required to: 

• Visit the UNMC campus and mentors in the fall of your junior and senior years. 
• Successfully complete the three semester-credit hour UNMC College of Public Health “Foundations in Public Health” course, delivered via distance education. 
• Declare a concentration and meet individual MPH concentration admission requirements.
• Successfully complete an entry level statistics course.
• Complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) by Sept. 1 of his/her senior year with verbal, quantitative, and analytic writing GRE scores at or above the 40th percentile.
