Creativity development. That's what the School of Arts and Humanities is dedicated to. We stimulate curiosity, encourage critical self-examination, and facilitate intellectual discovery.
Fundamentals for Success
We showcase student creativity and talent through a variety of student-run media, musical performances, theater productions, art exhibitions, and more. We promote cultural awareness and diversity for students and community members through local, regional, and global collaborations and interchange.
Studio facilities, performance and production facilities, exhibition facilities, a student-managed newspaper, a student-managed television station, and a student-managed radio station complement the school’s academic programs.
Student and community life is enriched through a wide variety of events, guest lectures, and presentation of visual and performing works by students, faculty, and guests throughout the academic year. Service-learning projects, cooperative education projects, and internship opportunities also give students experience and practice.
We provide abundant avenues for expression and exploration through research opportunities and a robust and diverse performance environment. The school’s wide variety of communications, language and literature, journalism, and theater, art, and music classes form the core of students’ liberal arts experience at Wayne State.
“We in the School of Arts and Humanities are students, scholars, and practitioners of all modes of human expression: word, image, gesture, and sound, from page to stage to web page. Humans have long sought to express the ineffable, respond to the world around us, and connect with each other. From Sartre to Seurat, Schumann to Snapchat, we analyze artifacts of expression, consider the theories that underpin them, and add our own voices to the chorus that has come before us. Humans are creative animals: Come create with us.”

“The Speech Communication department played a huge role in my preparation for my current career. They helped expose me to a variety of different opportunities that fit my interests and challenged me to broaden my skills and develop my strengths. In an area like communication that is incredibly broad, it helped immensely to have professors who were willing to guide me to specific opportunities in public relations, corporate communications, and even non-profit leadership.”

“I chose Wayne State because the faculty and students were welcoming, the campus was beautiful, and it all came at an affordable cost. I love the students in my major. The music department is like one big family. I transferred to Wayne State not knowing anyone, and I felt so welcomed right away in the music department. The faculty in the music department are absolutely incredible! You can walk into their office anytime, and they know you by name. They are always willing to pause what they are doing to talk to you and help you. After graduating, I plan on continuing my education and getting my master’s in music performance. Wayne State College is a wonderful school, and I am so glad I chose to transfer to WSC.”
Majoring in education with an endorsement in K-12 music
“When deciding on a place to further my education, WSC just made sense. While touring the college, I fell in love with the small campus, the friendly faces, and most importantly to me, the art department. I’ve always had a passion for the arts and wanted to go to school somewhere where I could grow as an artist and become an educator doing something I loved. During my studies at Wayne State College, one of my professors recommended me for an internship at the Norfolk Arts Center. That internship turned into part-time employment and eventually full time as the first education coordinator with the organization. Wayne State College has fully prepared and even assisted me to find an amazing career while giving me the opportunity to make so many unforgettable memories along the way.”
