Creativity development. That's what the School of Arts and Humanities is dedicated to. We stimulate curiosity, encourage critical self-examination, and facilitate intellectual discovery.

School of Arts and Humanities
Fundamentals for Success
Student Experience
We showcase student creativity and talent through a variety of student-run media, musical performances, theater productions, art exhibitions, and more. We promote cultural awareness and diversity for students and community members through local, regional, and global collaborations and interchange.
Facilities
Studio facilities, performance and production facilities, exhibition facilities, a student-managed newspaper, a student-managed television station, and a student-managed radio station complement the school’s academic programs.
Opportunities
Student and community life is enriched through a wide variety of events, guest lectures, and presentation of visual and performing works by students, faculty, and guests throughout the academic year. Service-learning projects, cooperative education projects, and internship opportunities also give students experience and practice.
Excellence
We provide abundant avenues for expression and exploration through research opportunities and a robust and diverse performance environment. The school’s wide variety of communications, language and literature, journalism, and theater, art, and music classes form the core of students’ liberal arts experience at Wayne State.
“We in the School of Arts and Humanities are students, scholars, and practitioners of all modes of human expression: word, image, gesture, and sound, from page to stage to web page. Humans have long sought to express the ineffable, respond to the world around us, and connect with each other. From Sartre to Seurat, Schumann to Snapchat, we analyze artifacts of expression, consider the theories that underpin them, and add our own voices to the chorus that has come before us. Humans are creative animals: Come create with us.”
Dr. Yasuko Taoka
Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities

"The instructor saw something special in my speaking abilities and took the time to advise me, which helped me feel very guided. The support in the Communication Arts Department is incredible, and you have a personal connection with every professor. It’s like a home – you’re a person, not a number."

“The experiences that were most valuable while at Wayne State were the ones where I took a leap of faith. I went out of my comfort zone and obtained so many different opportunities to grow. The faculty have been the best support system that anybody could have.”

B.S. Organizational Leadership and Public Relations

“The Speech Communication department played a huge role in my preparation for my current career. They helped expose me to a variety of different opportunities that fit my interests and challenged me to broaden my skills and develop my strengths. In an area like communication that is incredibly broad, it helped immensely to have professors who were willing to guide me to specific opportunities in public relations, corporate communications, and even non-profit leadership.”
