Navigators

What do the Navigators do for the College?

The Navigators are a select group of WSC students who have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership on campus. The Navigators are composed of many unique individuals whose activities and involvement are diverse. The main mission of the Navigator team is to provide a favorable image of WSC to its many publics: prospective students, parents, high school guidance counselors, and the larger community.

What would be my responsibilities?

The Navigators are the official student representatives of the College. In this role, Navigators conduct the campus experience, student panels, and serve as hosts for a variety of campus events. More importantly, the Navigators are the official group who tell stories! That’s right, they tell stories about why they chose to attend WSC, experiences students can have here, why they choose to re-enroll every year, and the career possibilities when they graduate! We know that no one remembers numbers…so instead, we tell stories!

What kind of time commitment is involved?

The Navigators have a standard of excellence that the College relies on daily. Navigators must be virtuous while committing themselves to the College at the highest level. In doing so, Navigators will find their largest time commitments in the following areas:

  • Weekly two-hour availability for the Campus Experience (10 a.m. to noon and/or 1 to 3 p.m.)
  • Assist with Focus On You Fridays, Start Your College Search Saturdays, Senior Saturday programs and other group visit events
  • Other events like Homecoming and athletic recruitment (occasionally weekend events)
  • Mandatory attendance at training at the start of the academic year
  • Mandatory attendance at bi-monthly meetings
  • Navigators typically work 5-10 hours per week

Benefits

  • Great networking opportunity
  • Contribute to the College
  • Gain work experience
  • Fun working environment
  • Fun social activities
  • Paid position
  • Obtain references
  • Build communication skills

What kind of person makes a great Navigator?

  • A currently enrolled, full-time student with one year completed at WSC
  • Has maintained a minimum 2.5 GPA during each semester of enrollment
  • Can commit to the program for at least one academic year
  • Has a positive, upbeat attitude toward Wayne State
  • Has an appreciation for facts and figures but is motivated to tell stories of their experiences
  • Has excellent verbal and communication skills and uses them to tell great stories
  • Most of all, is outgoing, friendly, and knowledgeable about Wayne State

Applications will be reviewed and those selected will be contacted via email to schedule an interview to tell their story before current Navigators and members of the Admissions staff. If you have questions about the Navigator program or the application process, please contact Riley Fitzpatrick, Navigators advisor, at [email protected] or 402-375-7082.
