Snow Removal Procedures

Weekday Procedures (school is in session)

  • Day Procedures (normal working hours)
    • Weather conditions will be monitored by Grounds personnel. Decisions for clearing operations will be made as situation warrants. It is possible that personnel will be required to stay past their normal departure time.
  • Evening Procedures (after normal working hours)
    • Security will monitor the roads and sidewalks until 10:00 p.m. to identify icy or slick conditions requiring sanding. When such conditions exist, Security will call the Grounds Manager.
      • Grounds Manager will make the decision as to the action required.
    • Security/Energy Plant will monitor weather conditions throughout the night. At 4:00 a.m. (Monday - Friday mornings), the Energy Plant will call the Grounds Manager if the following conditions exist:
      • Accumulation of 2 or more inches or snow and/or
      • Icy conditions that make driving or walking hazardous
    • Special Events
      • The Grounds Manager will assign someone to work an after normal working hours special event when there is inclement weather.
    • Weekday (school is not in session)
      • Same as weekends below.
  • Maintenance Standards
    • Primary roadways will be kept passable for emergency vehicles.
    • Plowing of major campus roads will normally commence when the snow has stopped or when a 4 inch accumulation is reached (possibly sooner if predictions are for a higher accumulation).
    • Sidewalks normally will not be cleared of snow between the conculsion of normal working hours and 4:30 a.m. the next day.
    • Sidewalks will be cleared for evening special events.
    • Normal start of winter clearning operations will commence at 4:30 a.m. It is possible that personnel will be instructed the night before or called at 4:00 a.m. to report to work early.

Weekend and Holiday Procedures

  • General
    • The Grounds Manager is responsible for providing safe campus conditions between the conclusion of normal working hours on Friday until the following Monday morning. If the Grounds Manager is not available, a supervisor designated by the Director of Facility Services will be assigned to monitor the weather conditions.
  • Weekend/Holiday Procedures
    • Security will monitor weather conditions throughout the day and evening up to 10:00 p.m. and will call the Grounds Manager if the following conditions exist:
      • Accumulation of 2 or more inches of snow, and/or
      • Icy conditions that make driving or walking hazardous
        • Grounds Manager will make the decision as to the action required.
    • Energy Plant will monitor weather conditions throughout the night. At 7:00 a.m., the Energy Plant will call the Grounds Manager if the following conditions exist:
      • Accumulation of 2 or more inches of snow, and/or
      • Icy conditions that make driving or walking hazardous
        • Grounds Manager will make the decision as to the action required.
  • Maintenance Standards
    • Primary roadways will be kept passable for emergency vehicles.
    • Plowing of major campus roads will normally commence when the snow has stopped or when a 4 inch accumulation is reached (possibly sooner if predictions are for a higher accumulation).
    • Sidewalks connecting the dorms to the Library and Student Center will be kept free of ice during daylight hours.
    • Sidewalks connecting the dorms to the library and Student Center will be cleared of snow during daylight hours if a 4 inch accumulation is reached.
    • Sidewalks will be cleared for evening special events. Grounds Manager will assign personnel as needed.
    • Normal start of winter clearing operations is 8:00 a.m. It is possible that personnel will be called back to work.
  • Special Events - - The Grounds Manager will assign someone to work a special event that is scheduled on a weekend when the forecast if inclement weather.

 

In the event that the Grounds Manager is absent, a designee assigned by the Facility Services Director will determine actions needed.
