Mother-daughter artists Judy and Amy Haney present “Textures” Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Nordstrand Visual Arts Gallery at Wayne State College. The exhibit runs through Sept. 26.

The Omaha, Neb. natives share a studio in Hot Shops Art Center where they work in tandem and lend one another a helping hand. Judy’s focus is abstract paintings with oil and cold wax, accented by photography and poetry. Amy is printmaker at heart yet finds watercolor equally stimulating.

After early retirement from her first career in nursing, Judy studied art and literature, obtaining a general studies degree from Creighton University. She also acquired skills in photography, sculpture, and oil and cold wax painting. Drawn to nature, Judy’s photographic eye is drawn to people or a specific aspect of landscape. Her paintings follow a perfectly imperfect journey of coordinating colors and patterns into a layered abstract of random sequences.

Amy delights in printmaking’s technical processes, complex planning, and meditative repetitiveness. Birds often dominate her works due to their undeniable spiritually and adaptability. Using wood, stone, and metal, Amy creates bold, powerful figures or delicate, vulnerable images. Her artwork has been featured throughout the U.S., in various publications, and in private collections. Amy holds a BFA in printmaking from Ringling College in Sarasota, Fla.; an MFA in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute; and an M.A. in art history from Prescott College, Ariz.

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 3 to 7 p.m. It is closed Saturday. Shows end at noon on closing day.
