Visiting Artist Series - "Last of the Light"

  • September 3 - 25, 2020
  • Nordstrand Visual Arts Gallery, Conn Library

Show is by artist Howard Paine. Show runs through Sept. 25.

Howard Paine "Last of the Light"

“I was fascinated during a trip to China last year,” explains artist Howard Paine, “fascinated with a new landscape and culture, as well as the inability to speak or read the language. This thinking combined with isolation that started with a shattered ankle and continued with the pandemic. The exhibition is an opportunity to contemplate beautiful images that provide many questions but few answers.”

"Last of the Light" uses traditional printmaking mediums including woodcut and lithography along with large format digital printing. Love of process, such as creating art layer upon layer over time, is evident in Paine’s work. Much of his art draws on scientific imagery and transformation of future experiences and self. Paine’s intention is to provoke thought and profound reflection.

Paine teaches printmaking at the University of Nebraska in Omaha and serves as liaison to Frogman’s Print Workshop in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He holds an MFA in Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and a B.A. from Grinnell College in Grinnell Iowa. His artwork has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe.

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 3 to 7 p.m. It is closed Saturday. Shows end at noon on closing day.
