VANTAGE, a senior art exhibit at Wayne State College, explores perspectives on the human psyche, nature’s bounty and decline, and rural life. An opening reception is scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28 in the Nordstrand Visual Arts Gallery in Conn Library. The reception is free and open to the public. The show runs through April 11 and includes artwork by seven WSC seniors.

Lexi Culver of Hinton, Iowa, and Amy Sager of Cozad are studio art majors who examine humanity. Culver uses ceramics, painting, printmaking, and sculpture to represent the relationship between mentality and physicality with the human form. Sager expresses love, happiness, anxiety, and depression using objects and human figures in drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, and mixed media work.

Elley Coffin of Norfolk, Kalan Rogers of Blair, Catherine Doran of Omaha, Kaci Schacht of Orchard, and Paige Spieker of Pierce are art education majors. Coffin’s artwork dissects the human psyche using surrealistic subjects often derived from ink or charcoal. Rogers explores nature’s beauty, habitat loss, and endangered animals with relief printing, oil paint, and matches.

Doran captures the network of life and the relationship between plants and animals with paint and ceramics. Schacht channels her childlike curiosity about dinosaurs with pottery. She also celebrates her heritage with cattle paintings and rural focused prints. Spieker primarily works with abstract sculpture representing family and hope.

Gallery director Dr. Andy Haslit curates the exhibit. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 3 to 7 p.m. It is closed Saturday. Shows end at noon on closing day.
