Rex W. Johnson

Inducted: 1983

Rex first attended Wayne State in 1942. He served in the Seabees from 1943-1946, and then returned to Wayne to finish his WSC athletic career from 1946-1949. . Rex lettered 4 years in football as a two- way performer at guard and linebacker. His senior year he was captain of Wayne State's 1948 championship Nebraska College Conference team. That same season Rex was all-conference, and was named to the Tom Harmon 'Little All America' team. He also lettered 2 years in track ('48 & '49).After graduation Rex served as head football coach (over a 12 year period) at the Nebraska High Schools of Battle Creek, Wahoo, Columbus, and Omaha Benson. He then was head football coach at Bellingham, Washington High School for 11 years. Rex also coached track at each of these schools, and received a MA degree from the University of Wyoming. When he retired in 1982 he was an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director in the Bellingham, Washington School District. Rex was inducted into the Wayne State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983.
