Merle McGee

Merle McGee, from Huntington Beach, Calif., was an outstanding track athlete at Wayne State College from 1956-1959. Today, two of his school records still stand. He holds the one mile run mark of 4:16.2 set in 1959 and sports a school record time of 9:19.5 in the 3,200 meter run, a mark also set in the 1959 season. McGee earned All-American honors in 1959, placing second in the two mile run at the NAIA National Meet with a time of 9:19.5. He was the 1956 Freshman Athlete of the Year at WSC and served as president of the 'W' Club. McGee served as a track coach for the Santa Monica Track Club and coached four-time Olympian 800 meter runner Johnny Gray, who won the bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games. McGee was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame October 4, 2003.
