2001 Baseball Team

The 2001 Wildcat baseball team went 35-10 with a 12-2 record in the Northern Sun Conference. Wayne State won the NSIC Baseball Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history. In the team's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, WSC beat Minnesota State 2-1 in the opening game of the Central Regional, then lost to Central Missouri State 12-3 and Minnesota State 11-5. Head coach John Manganaro was named the NSIC Coach of the Year and senior pitcher Brady Borner was selected the 2001 NSIC Pitcher of the Year after going 9-2 with a 2.74 ERA and 103 strikeouts on the season. He threw a no-hitter on April 13 that season in a 22-0 home win over Minnesota Morris. Eric Fitch was the NSIC Batting Champion after hitting .477 in conference play. Borner, Fitch, Joey Baldwin, Nathan Miller, Gary Redden, Andy Schultz and Brian Zimmerman were all selected to the 2001 NSIC All-Conference Baseball Team. Redden was named the NSIC Tournament Most Valuable Player while Borner was selected the NSIC Tournament Most Valuable Pitcher. The 2001 WSC baseball team was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame on September 25, 2010.
