Sakai Lessons Tool

A tool through which instructors can consolidate course materials, assignments,
quizzes, discussion forums, and multimedia while presenting all such items within a structure
that mirrors the actual flow of the course.

Sakai Lessons Tool 1

To create a Lesson:

Creating a lesson is a 4-step process.

1. Set up your Gradebook by adding gradebook items. ( Setting this up first allows you to
create grading categories and saves you from having to go back into a test/quiz,
assignment, forum, etc. and enter the grading category and/or connect the gradebook
with the test/quiz, assignment, forum, etc. later.)

2. Create your course materials including assignments, Forums, Tests & Quizzes,
uploading materials into the Resources folder, etc.
    a. These are the foundations for the lesson. The Lesson tool only creates a
link/pathway to the item/assignment you are having the student complete. This
streamlines the process for students so they don’t have to jump from each tool.
Everything is located in one spot and in the correct order to be completed

3. Decide how you are going to organize your material by week, unit, topic, any other
scheme that intuitively represents the flow of the course.

4. Create a lesson tool for each separate week, unit, or topic (however you choose to
organize your material). An example is if you have decided to organize your material
based on weeks and the course is 8 weeks long. In that case you will have to create 8
lesson tools.
    a. Go to the Site Info tool and select the Edit Tools button. Then, click the Lessons
tool from the menu and select Continue. Confirm the tool(s) you are adding to
your course site and click Finish.
Note: You will have to repeat this process for every lesson tool you want to
    create.
    b. Add your content to your lesson(s)
        i. For how to add specific content see the corresponding section(s) below.

To add a video to a Lesson
1. Go to the YouTube website and sign into your account. If you do not have an account
create one.
2. Upload your video and set privacy settings or search for the video you want to add to
your lesson. Or locate a video on YouTube or the internet that is appropriate for the
lesson.
3. Next, open and view the video, select the share tab underneath the video and copy the
URL (web address).
4. Login to Sakai and click on the course site you want to add the video to. Then, select the
Lesson tool and select the Add Text button.

To add Subpages
1. Click on the Add Subpage button and add a title for the page.
    a. Building a sequence of pages. Sometimes you want students to go through a
specific sequence of pages. Normally we recommend creating the pages as
subpages from a single main page, like:

Sakai Lessons Tool 5

(Sample of a unit with several sections: a small Add Text and three subpages, one for each section. Click on
each subpage to add content to it.)

That makes it easy for students to review all of the material. But if you want to
push students to go through in a particular sequence, you can add a link to the
next page, typically at the bottom of the page. If you do this several times, you
will build a sequence of pages.
    b. To add a next page, use Add subpage, but check the box next page. Typically
you'll also want to check the box show as button.
        i. Checking next page creates a page that won't normally return to the
current one. (Of course the student can always get to any page using the
page index, unless you have restricted access to the page.)
ii. Checking show as button gives you a button rather than a link.
    c. Going to different pages depending upon a student. Sometimes you may
want to ask a question and have students go to a different page depending upon
    how they answer the question.

Lessons tool 5

        i. To do that, ask the question using Add text, and then put two next page
items under it, going to different pages. To do that, use Add subpage
twice and check the next page and show as button boxes.
