Job and Internship Search Strategies

In today’s digital age, applying for jobs and internships can happen quickly, often leading to a surge in applicants due to the modern-day convenience of applying to multiple with just one click.

Due to the flood of resumes submitted to company websites, job portals, recruiting platforms, and more, relying on these methods alone can lead to your resume getting lost in the void with little chance of receiving a response.  We call this the resume black hole.

To avoid the resume black hole, students can work with a member of WSC Career Services to gain helpful strategies and a process that we guide students through with many resources that will help them take initiative and start engaging with professionals in their field to gain more traction in their job search.

Below is a taste of the job search process we coach students through:

  1. Develop a strong resume – receive guidance on creating a competitive resume for your field
  2. Prioritize target employers – create a list of employers that interest you
  3. Seek internal advocates for target employers – receive guidance on how to find prospective professionals
  4. Conduct informational meetings – receive resources on how to develop rapport and conduct a meeting
  5. Maintain connections and repeat – receive insight on how to maintain the connections you’ve built and to keep your network growing
