What is Curricular Practical Training (CPT)?
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows international students to gain work experience directly related to their major or academic curriculum. This practical training can take various forms, including internships and cooperative education programs. For international students seeking internships, co-ops, or off-campus employment, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization is essential.
Full-time vs. part-time:
CPT can be full-time (more than 20 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours or less per week). During the fall and spring semesters, you must maintain full-time enrollment, including the course associated with your CPT. In contrast, part-time CPT during the summer does not require full-time class enrollment.
Eligibility requirements:
To qualify for CPT, you must maintain your legal status as an F-1 student. This includes:
- Always having a valid passport
- Being registered as a full-time student each fall and spring semester
- Having maintained F-1 student status for at least one full academic year
