HHPS: Academic Programs
Exercise Science
The recently released Surgeon General's Report on physical activity emphasized the lack of physical activity in America. It stated that 60% of Americans do not get the proper amount of physical activity to maintain health. As a result, many diseases and maladies related to physical activity (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, obesity...) are quite prevalent. Addressing these problems requires a trained professional that is knowledgeable in the many facets of physical activity programming, as well as nutrition counseling, stress management and other lifestyle modification techniques.
The Exercise Science Program at Wayne State College has created a curriculum designed to provide the Exercise Science major with the academic background and technical skills to work in a number of health/fitness related careers. Students acquire their skills through practicums conducted in our laboratory, working in the WSC Wellness Program, participating in SHAPE Club, and finish their education with a 600-hour internship during their last semester. We are quite proud of the "hands on" experience we provide students at Wayne State College. We also offer a minor in exercise science.
