The structure to be estimated will be provided as a printed AutoCAD drawing. It will be a small garden-style shed with a lumber floor. It will use exterior plywood siding, 2x4 16" on center with 3/4" exterior grade plywood flooring and asphalt shingles over OSB sheathing.
The students will analyze the dimensions of the structure to determine the most cost effective lumber to use for the project and then calculate the total materials and the total cost. Carhart Lumber will provide lumber prices. Calculators will be allowed but not provided.
This activity will be timed.
Scratch paper will be provided for calculations.
May be done individually or in teams of two.
No calculation on fasteners will be required.
Estimates will be judged against a professional estimate from Carhart Lumber Company of Wayne of the same drawing the students receive.
The primary criteria will be how close the students come to the price of the estimate provided by Carhart. In case of a price tie, the amount of time taken to complet the estimate will be the tiebreaker.
