This course will offer students the opportunity to play music in the jazz idiom with a small group of select musicians. Ensemble skills will be developed as well as improvisation and style. The group will perform a variety of music in diverse venues and spend time developing improvisation skills.
Student Evaluation
Participation/Attendance will comprise 50% of the total grade for the semester. Attendance in this course affects not only the individual, but also the ensemble, so it is imperative that you attend all rehearsals. If you cannot make it to rehearsal and have a legitimate excuse, you must email the instructor before class with the information. Each unexcused absence will remove 10 percentage points from the Participation/Attendance portion of the semester grade. Unexcused absences from a performance will result in an automatic F for the semester.
Preparation/Improvement will comprise the additional 50% of the semester grade. Five sectionals will be held throughout the semester where the instructor will evaluate individual and section performance. These will be pass/fail grades. This is to ensure every member of the ensemble is constantly striving to make the Wind Ensemble as good as it can be.
