The Department of Music awards a number of scholarships to deserving students based on ability and financial need. Scholarship awards are available to students pursuing degrees in music in addition to students only wishing to participate in ensembles. To apply for an award, students must complete a written application and schedule an in-person audition.
The scholarship audition dates for 2011 are February 18 and April 8 .
THE ARDATH CONN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by the estate of Ardath Conn, a widely known concert pianist and teacher, and the daughter of U.S. Conn, first president of Wayne State College. It is awarded to music majors enrolled in two large ensembles.
THE MONTIE V. CHAPIN MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Virginia Chapin McCain of Winside, Nebraska. It is awarded to a music major with outstanding piano or organ skills.
THE JOHN R. KEITH SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in honor of John R. Keith, a former WSC Director of Bands at WSC. The scholarship is awarded to vocal or instrumental music majors.
THE FRIENDS OF MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by William and Rae Kugler for vocal or instrumental majors.
THE DOROTHY GLOVER McCLELLAN MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to a music education major, with a preference given to keyboard performers.
THE BLOOMQUIST-SLUTZ MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to students who show promise of leadership and academic ability in the field of music. Preference is given to seniors from Wakefield High School (Neb.) who plan to study music. If there is none, the Department of Music will make a selection for that year. The scholarship is renewable for four years for Wakefield graduates who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and show satisfactory progress.
THE CORNELL AND DIANA RUNESTAD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to sophomores or above (60 or more semester hours) who have been in Madrigal Singers, Concert Choir, and Band during the semester of award and during the previous two semesters.
THE DWAIN & CAROLE PETERSEN MUSIC EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is attending Wayne State College on a full-time basis, and who is from the Third Congressional District of Nebraska or the First Congressional District of Minnesota. Recipients shall be juniors or seniors preparing to teach instrumental and/or vocal music in the elementary or secondary public schools.
THE MARILYN (HAITZ) PIERSON MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded annually to an accomplished music student who also demonstrates financial need.
SPECIAL BAND DAY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded to students from area schools who participate in Band Day.
SPECIAL ABILITIES SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarships provide tuition assistance and are renewable. Students must enroll, or be enrolled in the Department of Music's large ensembles.
MUSIC GRANTS FOR NON-MAJORS
These grants are available for exceptional musicians who choose other majors. These awards are subject to availability of funds and require the recipient to participate in the major ensembles and programs of the Department of Music.
Choose an audition date from one of the two dates listed above.
Prepare one or two pieces from the standard repertoire for instrument or voice to be performed on the selected audition date. Selections do not have to be memorized.

Prior to audition date, we will notify you of your audition time and room number. All auditions are held in the Petersen Fine Arts Building at Wayne State College.
