Transfer-of-Credit Agreement

The Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education has a statutory duty to facilitate transfer-of-credit. In conjunction with this statutory duty and to enhance communication on transfer-of-credit issues within the sectors of higher education, particularly public institutions, the Coordinating Commission offers the following publication as a summary of institutional transfer-of-credit/articulation agreements.

In keeping with the goals of the Statewide Comprehensive Plan, the Coordinating Commission supports the following transfer of credit guidelines

  • That postsecondary institutions offer appropriate recognition of academic credits for equivalent courses from one public institution to another postsecondary institution to facilitate a seamless, coordinated public postsecondary educational system.

  • That postsecondary institutions accept those credits from a regionally accredited public college or university if those credits were earned with a satisfactory grade in an equivalent course.

  • That associate and baccalaureate degree-granting postsecondary institutions develop equal partnerships in providing the first two years of baccalaureate degree programs.

  • That postsecondary institutions work toward creating "portable" education credits for those programs that are equivalent in scope and quality to facilitate seamless transfer between sectors.

Articulation is no longer thought of solely as community college students transferring to four-year institutions. There are now additional categories of transfer students, including:

  • Reverse transfers, who move from a four-year-college to a two-year college,

  • Vocational transfers, who move to a senior institution from a career or proprietary institution,

  • Lateral transfers, who move from one community college to another, one state college to another, or one university to another,

  • Nontraditional transfers, including adults returning to college after years of "stopping out."

The Coordinating Commission commends the initial efforts of the postsecondary community on its collaborative statewide agreement on transfer of college-level credit, including the transfer of the Associate of Arts degree, to fulfill the general education requirements of the receiving institution. This statewide agreement is referred to as "The Nebraska Transfer Initiative" and was entered into on November 2, 1995.

Twenty-five Nebraska postsecondary institutions signed the Nebraska Transfer Initiative. Those public postsecondary institutions include:
