WSC Celebrates 100 Years at Homecoming

Published: 10-26-2010 3:55 pm

Wayne State College celebrated 100 years as a state college during Homecoming weekend Sept. 23-26. A centennial birthday celebration included the dedication of the Campus Commons area, the renovated Seymour Heritage Plaza, and Nordstrand Gallery, which was moved into a newly remodeled area of Conn Library from its old location in Peterson Fine Arts building. The celebration was held in Seymour Heritage Plaza.

The birthday event featured a performance by the Wayne State marching band; dedication remarks by Interim President Curt Frye; commentary by Steve Elliott, Wayne State professor of art, on the value of art; and Wayne State voice professor Elise Hepworth's rendition of Hail Alma Mater, which was written by Vernon Jacobs '42.

The college's campus commons area project replaced a street that ran through the core of the Wayne State campus with a pedestrian walkway bordered by native plants and trees. The commons area runs from the west end of campus beginning at the roundabout on J.G.W. Lewis Drive to the east side of campus terminating at Schreiner Drive. Funding for the project came from the Wayne State Foundation ($256,000), the college's cash reserve for capital projects ($350,000) and WSC special projects ($101,000).

The Wayne State Foundation extends its sincere appreciation to the following donors for their generosity in supporting the campus commons project: Dolores M. Troup; Mike and Coleen Riedmann; Al and Krissy Riedmann; Al and Shirley Riedmann; Mike and Vicki Bousquet; Irv Hoffbauer; Deborah and Bruce Lundahl; Don Hickey and Connie Clark; Beverly and Gary Buhrman; Dorothy and Norman Weber; Douglas and Cindy Christensen; and Norman Small II and Lee Sherry.
