Published: 4-20-2010 10:40 am

Wayne State students were awarded third and fifth place among 46 submissions in which the top five abstracts received recognition and monetary awards at the 24th annual spring tutorial meeting of the Northland Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (NACSM) held March 26 at Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. Kris Hinnerichs, Dr. Barbara Engebretsen, Dr. Donovan Conley and several students from the Department of Health, Human Performance and Sport attended the conference.

The meeting, titled "Ethical Procedures in Conducting Scientific Research: Do's and Don'ts," provided a forum for students and professionals to interact and network with regional and national scholars in Sports Medicine and Exercise Science and for students to present research papers. Research abstracts submitted from schools throughout the NACSM (Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska and South Dakota) were blind peer-reviewed by NACSM professionals.

Andy Bachman, Gerdon Kopecky and Jeff Pickinpaugh were awarded third place for their research abstract titled "Acute Fluid Consumption Improves Hydration Status Without Altering Body Fat in Collegiate Wrestlers." Austin Donner and Matt Stander were awarded fifth place for their abstract titled "Acute Stretching Followed by Varied Rest has Similar Effects on Upper and Lower Body Strength." Andy Bachman was among three students selected to give an oral slide presentation to all attendees at the meeting.  Bachman presented his honors research project titled "Effects of Sprint vs. Endurance Training on Mechanical Efficiency in Track Athletes."
