Wayne State Madrigal Dinners Run Nov. 30-Dec. 2 Published: 11-27-2012 4:15 pm Wayne State College will present the 41st annual Madrigal Dinners Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in the Frey Suite of the WSC Student Center. Dinner is at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and at 5 p.m. Dec. 2.
In the midst of music, poetry, and comedy enjoy a succulent four course feast featuring prime rib, wassail and flaming dessert. The Madrigal Singers, clad in sixteenth-century attire, transport audiences back to Renaissance England under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I for this Christmasse Feaste.
Well-known English Christmas traditions such as the hanging of the greens, decking the hall, carrying the birch log to the fire, and the boar's head processional are observed. Guests are entertained by strolling carolers and a troubadour who pass by each table of the hall singing carols or playing the lute. The jester keeps everyone entertained, and the punny play keeps the audience in stitches.
Flower sellers will be present. And, do be kind to the inevitable beggars who may be skulking about the entrance.
The Wayne State College Madrigal has given more than 350 performances in its 40-year history. The group has toured in Mexico and Canada in addition to nine trips to Europe. Madrigal and Concert Choir performed on the Christmas special Holiday Harmonies, produced by NETV in 2003, which was nominated for a regional Emmy. Madrigal sang performances in Dublin, the Rock of Cashel, and Galway Cathedral in Ireland in 2004. Members of the ensemble participated in the WSC Music Departments 2008 tour of northern Italy and Austria, and 2011 tour of Scotland and England.
