Published: 11-18-2011 9:20 am

The Wayne State College Black and Gold performing arts series will open the 2011-12 season on Sunday, Dec. 11, with the 12th annual President's Holiday Gala Concert. The free concert will be at 2 p.m. in Ramsey Theatre on the Wayne State College campus, and will be followed by a dessert reception hosted by WSC President Curt Frye.
The popular program is designed as a fast-paced concert, approximately one hour in length, highlighting some of the select performing organizations from Wayne State College along with Department of Music faculty, staff, and student soloists. Assembled for audience members of all ages, the concert will include festive and holiday music.

Gala performers include the WSC Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers, Jazz Band, Handbell Ringers, Saxophone Quartet, WSC Chorale, and faculty and staff soloists Dr. Linda Christensen (piano), Dr. Karl Kolbeck (woodwinds), Dr. Ronald Lofgren (lute),  Joshua Calkin (tuba), Lauren Calkin (percussion), Brad Weber (percussion), Dr. Joshua Thompson (trumpet), Dr. Elise Hepworth (soprano), and Philip Pfaltzgraff (piano). Musical selections will include festive and holiday favorites by Antonio Vivaldi, Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughn Williams, Leroy Anderson and others.

Performances by the WSC Wind Ensemble have been featured at the Nebraska and Iowa Music Educators' Conventions, and the WSC Concert Choir has appeared on the Emmy-nominated Nebraska Public Television special, Holiday Harmonies, as well as in performances with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra.
As the most select vocal ensemble at WSC, the Madrigal Singers continue a 40-year tradition of presenting annual Elizabethan Christmasse Feastes on campus and throughout the region. This group has also performed for the Niobrara Center and KMEG Television Christmas special, and at a major opening at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. The instrumental and vocal groups toured northern Italy and Austria in 2008.
For more than 50 years the Wayne State College Black and Gold performing arts series has presented cultural programming to serve the northeast Nebraska region. The 2011-12 series will continue Feb. 14 with a special engagement by The Acting Company.
The President's Holiday Gala Concert is free and open to the public.
