15th Annual 91.9 The Cat Turkey Drop Set For Nov. 17 at Pile Hall

The Wayne State radio station, 91.9 The Cat, will hold its 15th Annual Turkey Drop at 4 p.m. Nov. 17.
"We as a station are incredibly excited for the Turkey Drop this year," said Promotions Director Lexi Dvorak. "It's our 15th year organizing this event and that makes it very special."
The turkeys are basically anything as long as dropping the item from the third floor of Pile Hall is environmentally friendly. Entries are judged in several categories as they fly through the air. Campus organizations, and sometimes individuals, enter the contest each year. Categories include Best Dressed, Biggest Splat, Sharp Shooter, and Longest Hang Time.
The event was originally based on an episode of the hit television series WKRP in Cincinnati, noted Mike Marek, advisor to the student radio station. In the episode, the radio station drops live turkeys out of a helicopter as part of a promotion, not realizing that turkeys don't fly well. When the campus radio station was originally looking for a special event to celebrate Thanksgiving, a turkey drop seemed like a logical choice, as long as no real turkeys are harmed.
Each group or individual entering the drop was required to donate one can of food for the local food pantry. Winners in each category receive a trophy and a turkey pot pie.
