Father Raymond A. Bucko, associate professor of anthropology at Creighton University in Omaha, will be the guest speaker at the Wayne State College Multicultural Center’s Brown Bag series on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Bucko’s presentation, “Outside-In: On Respect and Research in the Ancient Ritual of the Sweat Lodge,” will be given as part of Native American Heritage Month activities. It will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Niobrara Room, Wayne State Student Center. It is open to the public; there is no admission charge.
Bucko has also taught at Le Moyne College, Oglala College, and Native American Educational Services in Chicago. His areas of specialization include social/cultural theory, religion, symbolic anthropology, history of anthropology, language and culture of Native North America, Great Plains and Lakota.
His publications include The Lakota Ritual of the Sweat Lodge: History and Contemporary Practice (Univ. of Neb. Press, April 1998) and “Sweat Lodge” in the Encyclopedia of American Indian Traditions. He has recently published a bibliographical review of literature on the Lakota and specifically on Black Elk which appears in a collection of articles entitled The Black Elk Reader.
