Network downtimes in May for Library renovation

Published: 4-17-2014 2:30 pm

Greetings all,

As the library renovation process gets under way, we are preparing for the implications to the network, phone and cable TV systems. The library, by virtue of its location, is the most central building on campus for the tunnel system through which all of our fiber optic and copper infrastructures run. The construction affords us an opportunity to relocate and renovate our distribution closet that connects all other buildings on campus to the network operations center in the campus services building. At the end of the project we will have two distribution centers: one well protected from any potential tunnel flooding and one well protected from tornados.

The process of abandoning the old closet and connecting two new closets to the existing fiber infrastructure is not a trivial one and will require complete network and phone outages for individual buildings on campus. Desktop computers, wireless, desk phones, faxes, courtesy phones and elevator phones will all be impacted during the outage. Due to the layout of the wiring, we will be doing the work in two weekend phases in May, as detailed below. Each phase will begin at 6:00 PM on the respective Friday and run through the weekend, with individual buildings coming back online as we splice the fiber into the new closets.

This work will NOT impact access to WSC systems from off-campus, so eCampus, www, WildcatsOnline, Sakai, etc. will still be available to students, faculty and staff working from home.
