Downloading and Submitting Assignments in WebCT
On the Assignment page, click on the assignment you want to work on. If there is an assignment-related file, click on it to open.
Downloading an assignment file
You should see a dialog box that gives you the options to select the file, open or download. Select the file by clicking the button in front of it. Then click Download. You'll get another dialog box that asks if you want to open or save the file. Click save, and save the file to your computer.
Open your word processor, then File/Open and browse to find the file. You may have to tell the word processor to look for a different kind of file. For example, Microsoft Word always starts by listing Word documents. To open a web page, you might have to click on Files of Type and change to All Files or Web Pages.
When you have read your assignment instructions, start a new file, type your assignment and save it. NOTE: Keep your filenames short, nine characters or less, with no spaces or special characters (percent signs, ampersands, etc).
Teachers at Wayne State typically use Microsoft Word, version 2000 or XP. If you use a different or much older word processor, you should save your file as a text file before submitting it. This is usually done in the Save or Save As dialog box by changing the file type to text. (WSC teachers will have difficulty opening files created in Wordperfect or Microsoft Works unless you save them as text files.)
Submitting assignments
When you are ready to turn in your assignment, return to the Assignment page, click on the assignment, click the Upload File button, and then click Browse to find the file on your computer. When you find the file, select it and click Open or OK or whatever choice your computer gives you. Then click the Upload button again. On the next screen, click on the box in front of your assignment file, and click the Submit assignment button. Click OK when asked if you really want to submit it. You should see a message that says your assignment has been submitted successfully.
When your assignment has been graded, you will see Status: Graded under the assignment. Click on Graded to see your grade.
Saving assignments as web pages
If your instructor asks you to submit your file as a web page, in Microsoft Word click Save or Save As. In the Save dialog box, under Save as type, select Web page. NOTE: Keep your filenames short, nine characters or less, with no spaces or special characters (percent signs, ampersands, etc).
If you have a different type of word processor and these steps don't seem to work, e-mail helpdesk@wsc.edu.
