Counselor/Advisor/International Student Advisor: August 1997  —  Present
Wayne State College, Wayne, NE

  • Counsel enrolled and potential students in career, academic, and personal concerns - primary focus on freshman/sophomore, at-risk, international, and undeclared students.
  • Advise students in course scheduling, college regulations, academic programs, and registration processes utilizing an intrusive-developmental model of academic advising and assist students in transfer advising where applicable.
  • Work with enrollment/recruitment and advising of international students in F-1 status on issues, concerns, and emergencies related to attending college in the United States (Fall 1999 to present); campus PDSO, responsible for changes and compliance with new F-1 regulations and change to SEVIS; responsible for managing and disbursing tuition/remissions budget for international student tuition waivers.
  • Work closely with Registrar's Office, Financial Aid, and Admissions to ensure students receive the assistance they need and to promote the students' successful completion of studies; assist with recruitment and enrollment wherever possible.
  • Work with Dean and Assistant Dean of students as needed on disciplinary and judicial processes to maintain a positive living and learning climate on campus; assist with Resident Advisor and Resident Director training during beginning of semester training periods.
  • Administer/interpret tests and inventories available in Counseling Center (SVIB, Personality - a shortened form of the Kiersey-Bates, SDS, NCIS, KUDER, etc.) and facilitate career exploration in individual career planning sessions.
  • Participated in liaison program between Advising Center and the School of Education & Counseling and the Computer Information Systems Department to enhance and promote inter-departmental communications between professional staff advisors and faculty advisors.
  • Design and implement counseling/advising related material for publication (Internet, flyers, newsletters, newspaper articles, journal articles, etc.). Webmaster for Counseling/Advising Office.
  • Participation in college functions/conferences and student organizations; advisor for GAMMA (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol) and International Club and assist in advising Science Fiction & Fantasy Club.
  • Administer standardized national tests for teacher education (Praxis I & II) and assist in administration of the ACT tests.

  • Provided growth/education activities for individuals in transition from psychiatric unit to mainstream society. Worked with individuals living in a 24 hour staffed psychiatric rehabilitation facility as well as those who lived independently within the community.
