Toward Responsible Use of Substances Today (TRUST)
Coalition Minutes
April 15, 2004 at 3:30 p.m., Cottonwood Room
Present: Dan Baddorf, Bruce Hokel, Cynthia Hruby, Kyle
Lindstrom, Kathy Mohlfeld, Jason Mrsny, Bill Triick and
Lance Webster.
Providence Medical Center initiative to educate local
schools about dangers of drinking and driving, riding
with a driver who has been drinking, and not wearing
a seatbelt when in a vehicle; Emergency Nurses CARE
(EN CARE) slide show personalized by stories of PMC
staff and community members; third high school presentation
will be Osmond High School tomorrow and the fourth will
be at Hartington C.C. on 4-21-04.
NCAA Choices grant application was not funded for Safe
Ride Program, Peer Educator Class and media campaign.
Updates from Workgroups/Committees:
Education & Information Report: Contact Keith
Willis at 375-7210 for more information.
- Heather Hein will present her Honors Project on
the social norm survey on
4-29-04 at 10:15 a.m. in Gardner Auditorium
- The Residence Hall Assistants will receive training
in the fall about social norms at WSC and how to
make a positive impact on students. Student Ambassadors
will also be getting the information.
- The committee is also looking at creating service-learning
projects regarding marketing and design ideas for
the group.
- The committee is seeking funding to advertise
the social norms on key chains to give to students
during Freshman Orientation. Connie Bargstadt will
reserve a table to pass out TRUST Coalition and
social norm information during orientation.
Neighborhood Relations Report: Contact Kathy Mohlfeld
at 375-7321 for more information.
- Three NU Directions speakers were snowed out on
March 3rd. It has been rescheduled to Wednesday,
April 28th. Presentations will be given about their
Responsible Hospitality Council (RHC).
- Goal: Offer local retailers proven practices that
will reduce alcohol-related problems while promoting
a profitable business.
- Bob Jergensen (P.O. Pears owner) is trying to
make contact with local bar owners to personally
invite them to the program.
- FORMAT CHANGE: It will be a panel presentation
followed by a question and answer session. This
will demonstrate group strength and also give each
perspective of benefits and lessons.
Policy & Enforcement Report: Contact Jason Karsky
at 375-7139 or Jason Mrsny at 375-7216 for more information.
- Safe Ride Program-will need to regroup, since
funding fell through with the grant application.
Mrsny indicated that they might try to approach
the Main Street group after the RHC workshop regarding
the Safe Ride Program.
- Chief Webster (Wayne Police Department) talked
about the city ordinance proposed regarding noise
disturbances and decibel levels.
- Chief Webster will also contact the State Patrol
about their car rollover demonstration program.
We may be able to incorporate this into the Fatal
Vision Goggles demonstration during the fall football
game, as wearing seatbelts are one of the best defenses
against drunk drivers.
- Chief Webster talked about the recent State Patrol
exercise testing liquor licensees in town regarding
checking identification.
