The SAVE Coalition Meeting Minutes, March 22, 2004
Present: Brook Jech, Ilene Nichols, Jason Mrsny, Brandy

Paulson, Jeff Carstens, Lance Webster, Michelle Meyer
Michelle Meyer called the meeting to order.
Minutes from the February meeting were approved as read.
New business:
Education and training efforts are moving forward,
Jamie Paulson worked with Karen Granberg to train
seven new peer educators on Saturday 3/20/2004.
The Peer educators along with The SAVE Staff gave
one dorm presentation in February in Anderson Hall,
17 individuals were in attendance.
One classroom presentation was given in Dr. Karlen's
Family class 12 students were in attendance.
Michelle Meyer attended a daylong workshop by Brett
Sokolow on sexual assault and alcohol, at Central
College in Pella Iowa. 3/19/2004
In addition training has been set up for law enforcement
and others on behaviors of sex offenders with particular
emphasis on non-stranger sexual assault and the effects
of rape and information for officers to keep in mind
when responding to a sexual assault report. This training
will be held May 17, 2004 from 1PM to 5PM on the WSC
campus. More information will be coming.
Grant update:
We are still waiting on the information and reporting
guidelines for the new on-line reporting that is being
mandated by the DOJ-OVW.
Policy report:
Work is still being done on the policy, the Ad hoc
committee meets Thursday 3/25/04 at 4PM in Connell
Hall. Deadline is mid May for inclusion in the 2004-2005
Student Handbook.
Teleconference report:
Last Months teleconference addressed working with
Greek Organizations on campus, Derek Anderson, the
Greek Council advisor and Ron Vick, GAMMA Advisor,
were in attendance. Out of the information presented
The SAVE Program and Greek Council will be working
together to bring the " These Hands Don't Hurt
Project" to WSC the first week of April which
is Sexual Assault Awareness month.
The March teleconference is at 1PM on Tuesday March
30, 2004 the topic will focus on working with international
communities, the teleconferences are held in the group
room in the counseling center. If interested in this
topic let us know seats are limited.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities:
Lavender ribbons were made available, although Brook
from Haven House indicated that teal is the color
being utilized for sexual assault awareness, clarification
will be sought on this and the proper color of ribbons
will be made available.
The " These Hands Don't Hurt Project" will
be discussed with the Greek Council this evening at
their meeting.
Bulletin Board information on sexual assault, stalking,
date rape drugs and relationship violence and information
for setting them up will be provided to each dorm
floor for creation and display during April.
Letters and information are being sent out to all
faith leaders in the community of Wayne and on the
WSC Campus by The SAVE program in collaboration with
Haven House.
Other awareness efforts include Denim Day on April 21,
2004 and Shine a Light on Sexual Assault on April 30, 2004
Discussion was held on co-sponsoring the "Clothesline
Project " somewhere on Campus with the assistance
of Haven House. It was decided we would do this utilizing
some space in the student center for display.
It was also suggested that we work with Judy Johnson to
coordinate publicity efforts.
and work through the city council to have a Mayoral proclamation
for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Other suggestions included
bring a speaker to campus, it may be too late to plan that
for this year.
Other business: The SART will be visiting the Mercy
Medical Child Advocacy Ctr, in Sioux City, IA. It is
the model for a center being opened by Mark Zimmer in
connection with Faith Regional in Norfolk. It provides
state of the art response, advocacy and evidence collection
for child victims. This visit will be April 5, 2004
