Policy Meeting
The Ad hoc policy committee met on Thursday March 25,2004
@4PM in the Conference Rm. In Connell Hall
Present: Gretchen Bauman, Lin Brummels, Jamie Paulson,
Karen Walker, and Michelle Meyer
The committee discussed the changes to the policy thus
far. The new policy will be identified as the Relationship
Violence and Sexual Misconduct Policy. It will include
policy information regarding relationship violence,
stalking, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. The
policy primarily provides a mission statement, the intent
of the policy and the definitions of terms.
The next step is the procedures, the operating guidelines
for the policy. It was decides that each of the specific
areas identified above should have their own set of
operating guidelines. Including what the victim and
accused can expect, levels of confidentiality related
to reporting, what will be done by various individuals
in the campus community if someone discloses to them,
victim rights, sanctions attached to specific behaviors
or conduct and resources. Michelle will continue working
on this next portion of the policy revision process.
Additional policy issues mentioned were: the conflict between
section W of the Student Conduct Regulations and section
B 2 of the Rights of Students Subject to Disciplinary Hearing
- regarding student attendance at committee hearings. Clarification
of this conflict will be sought. In addition Gretchen Bauman
will check into the lack of knowledge and clear designation
as to who our Title IX Coordinator is.
The understanding of the implications of Title IX and relationship
violence, and sexual assault as a civil rights violation
is increasingly important at institutions of higher education.
There was also discussion of the due date (5/15/2004) to
submit revisions for the student handbook for the 2004-2005
academic year. It was felt that even if the revisions are
not completed for inclusion in the handbook the information
about the revisions will be made available to the campus
community in a variety of ways.
