Violence Against Women on Campus Ad hoc Policy Committee
Meeting Minutes
The Ad hoc Policy Committee met for the first time January
21, 2004 at 9:00 a.m.
in the Student Activities Rm.
Present: Barb Black Pearl Hansen, Karen Walker, Lin Brummels,
Jaime Paulson,
Jeff Carstens, and Michelle Meyer.
Unable to attend: Laura Barelman and JoAnn Bondhus.
Introductions were made.
The meeting allowed for a general and open discussion of
WSCs' existing policy
on Sexual Harassment. The group discussed the need to either
revise or create
a whole new policy booklet and guidelines addressing sexual
assault, relationship
violence and stalking.
It was suggested that, for faculty, having a booklet that
was familiar in format and title,
handy and with all the information in one place, would make
it more easily and readily used.
It was also suggested that some sort of tear away handout
of information could be included in the booklet to be given
to students or others when necessary or possibly some sort
of card with information could be provided for this purpose.
After some discussion the general consensus was to revise
and update where necessary the existing sexual harassment
policy and guidelines to include the specific issues of
sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking. This
would also include a revision and update of the Sexual Harassment
Operating Guidelines. The goal of this committee is to have
the recommended changes in place by fall '04. These changes
would allow for these updates and revision to be included
in pertinent documents i.e. the student handbook, and handouts
and information provided at opening faculty and staff meetings
next Fall. It was also suggested that this expanded booklet
have a table of contents.
The Violence Against Women Program funded by the Department
of Justice grant, has been named the SAVE Program
( Students Against Violence Everywhere). Efforts are underway
by the SAVE Program to provide information on these topics
through multiple mediums to students, staff, faculty and
others both on and off campus. Revising these policies to
be more inclusive and accurate will facilitate the delivery
of WSC's procedures for responding to these issues, clarify
the student code of conduct, and enhance efforts toeducate
and train various groups throughout campus on these topics.
A rough draft of these revised documents will be created
by the Save Program staff under the guidance of Lin
Brummels, and then made available to the other policy
committee members for their feedback. At that time another
meeting will be scheduled to further evaluate the steps
necessary to implement these changes
Other topics discussed:
- JoAnn Bondhus' long and dedicated service to the
position of Sexual Harassment Officer.
- The status of the hiring process of the Human Resources
Director.
- The needed movement to support the Senates' discussion
to develop a Womens' coalition or commission on campus.
- Encouragement for everyone to be actively involved
in the WSC Presidential candidates visits next Monday
and Tuesday.
The meeting adjourned at 9:50 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Michelle Meyer
