Fall Gently Used campus and community sale – Wayne Auditorium

Donated items collection dates and times

Sales Dates

Slow economic times equate to an increase in those in need of assistance.  The Gently Used Sale provides a bargain shopping venue, as well as, revenue for Community Action Center support of low income family needs.

Profits will go to a Community Action account to meet specific needs of low income families such as:

  - Gas vouchers
  - Infant car seats/carriers
  - Community Activity Center membership
  - Wayne Pool and Swimming lesson pass
  - School supplies

Rotary 5 K Fun run profits go to Habitat for Humanity

Victor Memorial Park; beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Have some early Halloween fun, enjoy some exercise, and help support the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity ! Costumed participants will be eligible for prizes.

CCSC Symposium and Brown Bag series begins

Both the fall and spring symposium will be held in the Wayne Auditorium.  Each of the six WSC Campus Brown Bag lunch gatherings will be held in the Cotton wood Room of the Student Center.

Campus and Community conversations designed to cultivate an understanding of “why we serve” focusing on the individual values, beliefs, and practices of service.

Campus and Community leaders who participate in one or both of the symposiums (fall or spring) will be invited to present at one of six campus Brown Bag luncheon gatherings.

Hunger and Homelessness

Hunger and Homelessness is a national awareness campaign to address the issue of poverty. It takes place each year the third week of November (12-19 are the official dates for 2011). Dr. Jean Karlen professor of Sociology began a WSC drive to help stock the food pantry several years ago, and this tradition has been carried forward by Todd Greene. Students in Sociology classes have a CRAM the VAN drive, a WSC van is parked at Pamida and Pac n Sav students then collect donations from patrons. This year the van will be at Pamida on Wednesday 11-16 and at Pac n Sav on Thursday 11-17 both days the students will collect donations from 12-6 p.m. with the goal of cramming the van full of items to be donated to the local Wayne food pantry.

Mercy Meal Packaging event - Cup of Grace 3-8 pm

Mercy Meals of Nebraska is a non-profit organization that allows volunteers to package nourishing food that will be delivered by the Orphan Grain Train to children in need throughout the world.

Festival of Trees

What is Festival of Trees? Imagine the holiday season in your home without decorations or gifts. For many northeast Nebraska families, this bleak situation faces them every year during what should be a joyous time. Make their holiday dreams come true by sponsoring an entry in the 2011 Festival of Trees. Together, we can make a difference for local families in need.

Your campus organization (e.g. club, department, dorm, Hahn office, support staff) agrees to purchase and decorate a tree to be displayed in the Student Center atrium from Nov. 28 - Dec. 2.

The campus and community will be invited to view the trees and vote on their favorite "themed tree" via cash donations.

Donations will be used by the participating campus organizations in order to purchase gifts for needy area children.

NOTE: Organizations must commit to a $20 base donation and use that money (in addition to whatever money is donated toward their tree during the Festival) to purchase gift items for children.

2012 International Dinner and Entertainment Night

Tantalize your taste buds and learn about different cultures during the 2012 International Dinner hosted by the members of the International, Spanish, and other Clubs of WSC. This is a unique opportunity for guests to enjoy diversity through food, international dances, songs, and other entertainment while learning more about the culture and traditions of other countries. Foods from several different countries will be highlighted during the evening meal. The atmosphere is family-friendly and gives everyone a chance to meet the international students attending Wayne State College.

When Helping Hurts: Is Aid the Answer?

Based on the book “When Helping Hurts” By Steve Corbett & Brian Fikkert, this conversation will focus on a Christian worldview of poverty and charity.   An approach to alleviating poverty “without hurting the poor…and yourself” will be identified.   Participants of diverse belief sets will find models to consider when deciding how to really help.  If you have ever wondered, “What can I do to make a difference?” this conversation is for you.  We will examine our motivation, thinking and approach to providing aid to suffering people, and learn some practical tools to use when addressing the needs of the poor in our neighborhoods and the world.

Distinctions are easily made between the sacred and the secular; between religious and nonreligious pursuits. But are they mutually exclusive or are they heavily integrated?

"Practicing the Presence of God" on a regular basis can help give meaning to
mundane, everyday tasks; for example, I can…connect with God by showing gratitude. In
this session the conversation will be about the benefits of "practicing the presence of God'
and practical ways that we can do this in our everyday lives.

Health, Wellness, & Resource Fair - 3:00-7:00 pm

The Wayne Campus & Community Health, Wellness, & Resource Fair is a joint effort between the WSC SHAPE Club, the WSC CCSC group, and the City of Wayne. This year's theme is “Marching Together: Taking Steps Toward a Healthier You”.

We would like to include as many businesses and organizations as possible. If you did not receive an invitation letter in the mail or you are not sure if your business or organization qualifies, please contact Kris Hinnerichs. We would like as many businesses and organizations to participate as possible. Registration Due Date for Participants (Booths and/or Activities) is Friday March 2.

The Fair has 3 main purposes:

Aqua-Africa Fund-Raising Event

Wine & Cheese Social Hour
Wednesday, April 18, 2012
5:30 - 6:30 p.m. • Majestic Theatre
$10 (suggested donation)

The non-profit is based out of Omaha and founded by Sudanese immigrants, one of
whom is a WSC alumnus. Their mission is to provide clean water to South Sudan
villages. Their first completed well, which was funded by Nebraskans, was named
Aqua-Nebraska. Our hope is that we can raise funds for a Wayne America well.

Buay Wiyual (WSC alumnus) presented Aqua-Africa information to the Wayne
Rotary Chapter and to the campus at a Brown Bag event on April 4. Co-founder
Buey Ray Tut will be in Wayne for the April 18 event. The wine and cheese social hour
will be followed by a short awareness program and question-and-answer session.
